Ek Villan

Bollywood has steadily segregated itself into three broad groups. First group is the one who creates original content and the second is the one who adapts older content from elsewhere and gives adequate credits. Like what we saw in Citylights when director Hansal Mehta made it clear through half a dozen mentions that his film is an adaptation. The makers of Ek Villain, irrespective of what their earlier credentials may be, have gone into the third group - the ones who copy and do not attribute original source.

And that is where Ek Villain falters. With a ready premise, the director and his team was left with a task to build a screenplay which could fit well for the Indian audience. They did come up with very impressive additions in characterization and story, but lost way in trying too hard to do the same. So much that the film slipped from being a thriller to a slower drama.

The three-day box office collections indicate that movie buffs are loving "Ek Villain". The Balaji Motion Pictures' latest offering has set the cash registers ringing ever since it hit the screens June 27.

"Ek Villain" has so far collected Rs. 50.70 crore (Friday Rs. 16.72 crore, Saturday Rs. 16.54 cr., Sunday Rs. 17.44 cr.). Released on 2539 screens nationwide, the romantic thriller has emerged as one of the biggest openers of the year in terms of screen average, said a statement.

Guru is a quiet, tough and ruthless boy, working for a politician, Prahlad. A dark past refuses to let Guru sleep at night until he meets a girl, Aisha.

He falls in love with her, his life changes and he convinces Aisha to get married to him.

Guru even quits his job and moves from Goa to Mumbai to make a new beginning with Aisha. Just when things seem perfect, she falls prey to an attack.

Devastated, Guru starts hunting the miscreant and is shocked to learn of his seemingly innocuous and simple identity. Something is amiss and Guru is unable to place a finger on the precise problem.

Who is the real assailant? Does Guru succeed in getting even with the assailant? And what is the motive behind her killing?

The plot thickens as the astonishing mystery unveils and new realizations come to the forefront.

This visceral, hard-boiled edge-of-the-seat drama with romance and chart-busting music, comes from director Mohit Suri, renowned for his inimitable cult films, Woh Lamhe, Zeher, Awarapan, Raaz-2, and the recent Aashiqui-2.

Queen: movie Review

The story is the simplest you’d ever come across in a Bollywood movie. The plot revolves around Rani, a typical Delhi girl living in Rajouri Garden. Preparations for her wedding with fiancĂ© Rajkumar Rao are in full flow when he suddenly dumps her, just a few days prior to the wedding. Instead of sulking in a corner, Rani decides to take off to France and Amsterdam on her honeymoon, all alone. How she sets on a beautiful journey of self discovery amongst the ‘goras’ she can hardly communicate with, shapes the rest of the film.

In one word, the film is extraordinary. From the very first scene, the film establishes a strong hold over your senses with the detailed nuances it captures. You cannot help but crack up every time the ‘Vijay Weds Rani’ sign is shown struggling to find its place in the ‘shaadi ka ghar’. In a Bollywood film, it is a given that there will be a lot of melodrama and howling, but ‘Queen’ belongs to a different league altogether. Having grown up within the four walls of her Rajouri Garden house, she can barely manage to cross the road alone without parental guidance. The director acquires a mastery over making Kangana’s character evolve a million folds through the course of this journey of self-discovery. Her breaking out of her cocoon in a foreign land where people barely understand her is endearing and heart warming to say the least.  The director deserves nothing less than a standing ovation for delivering one of the best films Indian cinema has ever seen. The editing is pitch perfect and the cinematography mind blowing.

Kangana Ranaut is a revelation in ‘Queen’ . The Bollywood film fraternity is already raving about her performance in the film and we wouldn’t disagree. She is a star and manages to pull off the film on her shoulders single-handedly. Not that other actors have delivered any less. But Kangana makes an exception by sinking deep into the skin of her character and bringing it alive on screen. You have to see it to believe it. Rajkumar Rao has already proved his mettle and lives up to all the expectations. Lisa Haydon deserves a special mention. She lights up the screen every time she arrives.
Amit Trivedi has once again delivered a smashing album. London Thumakda is already topping the charts. The rendition of ‘Maine Hothon Se Lagayi Toh’ forms one of the most enjoyable moments in the film. Other tracks are also well placed and hummable.

Verdict – Bollywood has reached a new high with ‘Queen’ and Kangana has set the bar a little too high for her contemporaries. The film delivers a very strong message to every woman out there – no matter how unmanageable life may seem at the moment,  a woman can always overcome it all and emerge out stronger. A perfect watch for Women’s Day, Queen is one of the best Bollywood films ever.

Highway Movie Review (Highway -NO Way)

Ratings:2/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
Blame it on the undercooked script, or the fact that Ali stretches the film's overarching theme so thin that it's reduced to an empty cliché. The film - a brave experiment on Ali's part, who uses long stretches of silence, improv dialogues, and characters over plot to drive the narrative - doesn't necessarily work. It's meandering and indulgent in many parts, tiring you out well before it's over. I'm going with two out of five for Highway. A beautiful mess, but a mess nonetheless.

On the whole, HIGHWAY is a triumph for Alia Bhatt, who delivers a marvelous performance. Also, what you carry home, besides Alia's winning performance, are the stunning visuals, especially towards the second hour. But the treatment of the written material restricts its appeal largely. The connoisseurs of cinema and a tiny segment of the movie-going audience may go ga-ga over the film, but there's precious little for the large base of mass audience that's looking at the entertainment quotient from the maker of hugely admired entertainers like JAB WE MET and LOVE AAJ KAL.

Highway is a problematic film. Elements in it have great beauty - starting with Anil Mehta’s cinematography. And yet, I left the theater, deeply dissatisfied. The film posits kidnapping as therapy. It tells us: So what if you’ve been abducted, heal yourself as you travel the undiscovered countryside. Given the horror inherent in the situation, this just feels false and fundamentally, wrong. I’m going with two and a half stars.

If one were to speak about the pre- and post-interval portions, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the pre-interval part is lighter and more entertaining. The second half seems stretched, besides being a bit heavy and unrealistic. On the whole, Highway is entertaining but only upto a point and only for the youth in the big cities. Its weak second half and the class-appealing nature of the drama will tell on its performance in the smaller centres and in single-screen cinemas. Overall, its run at the cinemas will not be upto the mark.

Highway is not a sunny, funny road-trip. It is Imtiaz Ali's starkest, darkest work yet.But what stamps this film indelibly is its sheer boldness. At times, Highway feels like an unending Bharat darshan, a long look at suffering souls through several deserts and eucalyptus trees. But some meandering is its only flaw. Watch it for its cathartic creativity.Highway is not an easy ride. But it offers fresh breezes and new sights.

Highway isn’t merely concerned with cataloguing the virginal, versatile landscapes of Northern India. Often it’s the only ray of cheer to offset the grimness concealed within two wounded souls. Highway, he uses travel like artistry, a narrative form to unfold the adventures of its two leading protagonists learning (and unlearning) a few precious lessons about the capricious course life follows when tackled head-on.

It has many a moment that is endearing and exquisitely etched, but the film is not always engaging enough to be able to offset the occasional inertia that stems from its lack of physical action. But doubtless, Highway is a must watch as much for what it is as for what it isn’t. It is not a typical romantic drama, nor an average love story. It is a road movie with a difference. Highway dishes out a trip that is definitely worth the price of the ticket.

A couple of damaged strangers seeking redemption via a road journey is the premise of Imtiaz Ali’s latest ‘Highway’. The director’s attempt to move away from his trademark candyfloss-ness has mixed results: this is perhaps the most picturesque road movie I have seen coming out of Bollywood, but the story struggles with its twin threads and uneven tone. ‘Highway’ is a patchy ride, with the occasional high spot.

It is a film about nature and travel; about a meandering journey without a definite destination. Highway makes for the kind of cinema we need, perhaps not something we entirely deserve. Even if you aren't moved by its unhurried simplicity, or do not agree with this review, I challenge you to resist an overwhelming urge to rush out after dark hoping to get kidnapped (or simpler, just take off) to the foothills of the Himalayas. In that itself, is the battle won by a film that strives for little more.

It is rare that a Hindi language film delivers so much promise in the first half.' 'And so it is extremely disappointing when the director and his script lead us on a journey that eventually fizzles out, collapses and dies in front of our eyes. This is the first time in recent years that a Bollywood film has paid so much attention to scenic beauty. Highway is a beautiful looking film and the cinematography helps sustain our interest, even as the narrative forgets where it is heading.

A scary prospect is that Highway might not make money at the box office. Some will no doubt criticize the film’s silences, long takes and lack of naach gaana. That’ll be a shame because it’s not often that a successful commercial filmmaker has the courage to take a sharp left from the blockbuster formulae and make something that’s different. There is so much to appreciate in Highway and if it can goad other commercial filmmakers to take notice and also dare to try something new, we’ll all be richer for it.

With Highway, Imtiaz takes the road less travelled and tries something very different from not just his usual style of films but goes ahead to challenge something that we have not seen in Bollywood movies. Although the problem that emerges is that he is not able to hold it together. Forget the reliability factor, the film is way too slow to offer any entertainment.Avoid this Highway, it will lead you nowhere!

Deepika Padukone: 'The men in Bollywood walk away with the credit'

"Unfortunately the guys in Bollywood always walk away with the credit of a hit film," she said. "I can never do a meaningless role in a 100 crore film. Maybe other actresses can do such silly song and dance routine numbers in such films, but I would always prefer to do a Cocktail. I think I benefited a lot from Cocktail even if it was not a 100 crore film."

The 26-year-old actress, who is currently shooting Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram Leela with Ranveer Singh, also said that being linked with your co-star is a professional hazard, and the speculation about her love life does not affect her.

Some of this scenes have boosted the roomer even more, but in counter deepica has said that "They had started rumours linking me with many other actors before the release of other films. I don't know if it is a publicity gimmick but, like I said before, I don't mind the speculation.

"It does not affect me who I am romantically linked with because I know I am single and eventually I am living the life I know best. But a single girl is allowed to have male friends and share a good rapport with them.

"Unlike what people perceive of me, I'd love to be with someone who is simple, honest, interesting and makes me laugh. It took me time after my last breakup to start meeting other men. But one can easily fall in love again. Actors' love lives are open books now and if people want to speculate, I can't help it."
